Popular Culture: One Direction Storm to Top of US Billboard 200

On a Mission - One Direction are taking the world by storm

Earlier today we heard news that The X Factor winning boyband One Direction had stormed to the top of the official American albums chart, the Billboard 200, making them the first British music act to attain a debut number one album in the US. The album, 'Up All Night' according to Nielson SoundScan shifted 176,000 copies in its first week whilst causing a ruckus throughout America as they have been recently promoting the album in in the States and Canada. The group which mainly consists of teenagers, has an astonishingly unrivaled fanbase considering they were only on The X Factor stage in 2009 fighting for their musical lives against eleven other acts. It doesn't matter if you're a fan or not of One Direction which consists of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, they have made history as a group doing what The Beatles, The Spice Girls and others couldn't, whilst also flying the flag for the UK overseas.

The Billboard 200 is the mother of all charts

They are doing it big at the moment and it's beginning to get harder and harder to step outside your house without seeing their faces on a billboard, or go on twitter to find they're not trending! Their manager who is no other than Simon Cowell has created a monster, a monster that is going to earn him a lot of money for years to come and he proudly stated 'I couldn't be happier for One Direction,' added X Factor judge Simon Cowell, who signed the band to his Sycorecord label. It is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world.'

Trendy Tots - Twitter has played a massive role in 1D's success

And it is those 'fans' that take us to our next point. It is obvious that the group have such a strong dedicated fan base and it is very clear that they as a group are going to have many years of success. For those of you who don't already know this, breaking America is not an easy thing to do, many have gone across the pond and failed (Robbie Williams to name a few!), so it is a remarkable achievement that the group have claimed their first number one in America whilst over here the album bizarrely only managed to chart at #2. Part of their success is largely down to twitter, which has become a brilliant plattform for self promotion and getting material out their to the rest of the world. Like we said in the previous paragraph, they as a band trend on twitter a lot, if anything at least twice a day, with separate members (usually Harry Styles and Zayn Malik) also featuring on the worldwide trending topics themselves. 'Directioners' as they like to call themselves, have played a hugely instrumental role in the group's success, that is unquestionable, and whilst the members of the group are still incredibly young people, this most definitely is only the start of their (and Simon Cowell's) quest for world domination. Stay tight!

The debut album 'Up All Night' is out worldwide now.
